Orchestra of the Filipino Youth

sistema

Ang Misyon established the ORCHESTRA OF THE FILIPINO YOUTH (OFY) comprised of fifty-eight of the SFY Scholars, handpicked from various ensembles that already exist, and are spread throughout the Philippines. In its first year, the OFY was directed by Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, and since 2013, French-American conductor & the Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition winner Olivier Ochanine has taken over the helm. The flagship ensemble has performed in various venues and has gone on concert tours to Iloilo, Isabela, & Dumaguete, performing to capacity crowds. In April 2015, the OFY joined forces with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the batons of Maestro Ochanine & Gerard Salonga in Ang Sistema: The Young People’s Concerence – a fundraising concert & conference at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Arts Center in Makiling.

In 2016, AMI reached three major milestones. Seven senior members of the OFY forming its Strings Quorum, were selected to go on the first International Awareness & Educational Tour of the United States. The six performances in New York City, New Jersey, and Washington DC were received with overwhelming standing ovations. In July, half of the OFY under the baton of Associate Conductor Edwin Lumanug, collaborated with members of the Amazing Orchestra of Malaysia, the KLPAC Symphonic Band, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in three concerts at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center to benefit Child Aid Asia & the National Cancer Society. Most recently, Ang Misyon is on the cover and featured in the book ‘Playing For Their Lives’ – co-authored by Tricia Tunstall & Eric Booth – as “one of the most significant El Sistema programs in the world”.
